The Amerisleep AS4 mattress advertises itself as one of the best ever mattresses for side sleepers – which is what drew our interest in it in the first place. At first sight it appears to be a full memory foam mattress that comes with all the mod cons. Of course, we couldn’t wait to dig in and see if this mattress really was all it’s cracked up to be.
So how does the Amerisleep AS4 Mattress stack up against other memory foam mattresses? Let’s find out…
Branding
Amerisleep doesn’t have the best branding that we have ever seen. That doesn’t mean to say there is necessarily anything wrong with it: more that it doesn’t have the same smooth, sleek edge to the website that we might expect from a big named brand. That being said it seems that the majority of their budget is plied towards research and technology instead – which is never a bad thing where mattress manufacturing is the goal.
What they do have are thousands of positive reviews, high performance materials, a well placed, well developed description of everything you need to know about the bed – and the right color combination to catch your attention and keep it. They also put all of their reviews – both good and bad – right there on the front page of their website. We like it when a brand does this, it really speaks to integrity.
Amerisleep are a popular American brand who specialize in affordable memory foam bedding. They also provide other AS numbers of differing softness. The AS4, which we are reviewing, is their medium soft option. Their price range for these mattresses is reasonably high for what they promise to do.
We gave the Amerisleep AS4 mattress a 9 out of 10 for branding as we felt they could focus that little bit more.
Comfort and Feel
The Amerisleep AS4 has the distinctive feel of memory foam, which basically means that you will know you are lying on a memory foam bed. For a supposedly medium soft bed it also sits at around 6.5 on the firmness scale – which we would usually regard as medium firm. That being said there is a lot more sinkage in this mattress than we are used to experiencing. For a 12 inch mattress a heavier person can sink down a full 6.5 inches. So although it may not be the softest memory foam mattress you have ever slept on, it will definitely conform to your shape and envelope you!
The top layer of the Amerisleep AS4 is made up of a four inch memory foam layer. This layer aims to provide pressure point relief by way of their own patented type of memory foam. This invention uses and open celled foam structure that allows for greater softness and sinkage, while also spreading heat around. They do use special techniques to create this Bio- Pur foam that helps to eliminate some of the petroleum used in the production.
They have added a high performance, Celiant cover of their own design that retains 13 minerals that react to the heat of your body to keep the mattress performing over time. They also made their memory foam extra breathable and sag-free.
We gave the Amerisleep AS4 Mattress a 9 out of 10 for comfort and feel.
Customers love this mattress, they love the full foam feel and the comfort and support it gives them. Dennis, from Denver, said:

So as you can see, this mattress will work for some people with back problems. It really just depends on your issue.
Delivery of the Amerisleep AS4 mattress is usually free and will take between 5 and 10 working days from when you order it until the time it arrives. If you need to return the mattress for any reason the return will also be free. When it does arrive it will come vacuum sealed in plastic wrap and rolled into a box. This method of shipping means for a lower carbon footprint to each mattress.
When your mattress arrives we suggest that you take it into the room you want to keep it in before you start to remove the box. When you do cut the box away the mattress will unroll. At this point you should place it where you want it to go before you cut through the plastic. When you do cut through the plastic wrapping be very careful not to damage the fabric of the bed.
Once you have freed it from the plastic your bed will begin to expand. It will take up to 24 hours of your mattress to become normal sized but you will be able to sleep on it before then. We advise that you sleep on a mattress for a couple of weeks before deciding whether or not it is right for you, as some mattresses can take time to settle.

Off-Gassing
Off-gassing is a bit of a strange term to us because it doesn’t really mean anything other than ‘new product smell’. Anything that you buy is going to smell like the place it was stored or the place it was packaged. Off-gassing is similar to the smell of a new pair of shoes or a new car and is nothing to be concerned about. If you are worried about it, you can buy mattresses which come with CertiPUR-US certification to assuage your fears.
Usually, it is natural or organic mattresses that have the most smell to them. This is because the natural fibers they are made from tend to have a strong scent. When you do purchase the Amerisleep AS4 mattress there should be very little smell as it is neither natural or organic. We noticed hardly any scent at all but if you should notice a smell then adding a mattress protector and some sheets should make it barely noticeable. Additionally, any scent shouldn’t linger for more than a day or so.
We gave the Amerisleep AS4 Mattress a 10 out of 10 for off-gassing because we barely noticed a smell at all.
The makers at Amerisleep have put a lot of time, effort and money into crafting the perfect materials to construct their mattress with. To start with they have that high-performance Celiant fabric cover with the 13 thermostatic minerals meant to aid muscle recovery. Under that top layer you will find their extra breathable cooling Bio-PUR foam layer. This is reportedly five times more breathable than regular memory foam but we would caution that it is not cooling gel infused. This is perhaps a good choice for those who want a cooling mattress but that don’t want the environmental damage creating cooling gel infused foam can cause.
The bio-PUR foam is also designed to soak away any moisture and keep you dry while you sleep. Underneath this there is a transition layer which they call their Affinity layer. This layer contains Surface Modification Technology that is zoned to support key pressure points like your shoulders and your hips. This is why this mattress is so good for side sleepers. This layer features precision cut layers which also work to move moisture away from the body.
Their base layer is made from a Bio-Care support foam that they patented themselves, proving just how much attention they have paid to research and development. This base layer is denser, provides support and keeps the whole structure above in place. They also guarantee it to be eco-friendly and sag-free.
One of the features that memory foam is actually best known for is its ability to soak up and disperse weight. By conforming to the shape of your body and cupping you in your sleep, the AS4 allows for great support for any sleeper. When you couple it with the supposed benefits to your muscles of the Celiant material what you end up with is a highly beneficial, very supportive mattress.
But how is the motion reduction? Superb. Because this is a full memory foam bed without any springs and that has a load of sinkage – there isn’t much bounce at all. Bounce is great for a kid who wants to jump on your bed – but it’s not great for those who have trouble sleeping beside a partner who tosses and turns. If you are a light sleeper who is looking for a bed that doesn’t bounce then this might be the one for you…e specially if you have a history of muscle aches and pains.

By somewhat harsh comparison; the edge support in memory foam mattresses is infamously terrible. Without any special attention to the edge what it tends to do is sag under you when you try to get in and out of bed, or when you sit on the edge. As we already mentioned above this mattress has incredible amounts of sinkage – more than we have come across in a long time – and yet it still has a little retention and strength around the edges.
The base layer of this bed is crafted from a dens layer of 7 inch thick poly foam. This helps the mattress hold its shape and stops you from sinking down any more than 6.5 inches. No matter how precariously you perch on the edge of the Amerisleep AS4 you won’t fall off… even if you do sink down a fair bit.
Our recommendation here is that people who struggle to get into and out of bed should perhaps give this mattress a miss. If you want to be encompassed in cloud like luxury, however, work away.
Temperature
Although this mattress does use a special type of memory foam to account for temperature; memory foam in itself is a substance that tends to sleep very hot and can stick to you. Since this feels like a memory foam bed when you lay on it, you might not enjoy the experience unless that is what you are looking for. Further to this, the Bio PUR foam that they use is temperature neutral rather than regulated, which means that it won’t work to cool you down, it will simply promote airflow.
There is some evidence that the Celiant fabric is cooling, but it is certainly highly breathable and has been fitted to move with the material of the mattress. There are also several different layers to the mattress, which allows for air to move around under you as you sleep. In addition, the mattress is zoned into different areas to promote pressure point support and relief – and all of these transitional layers work together for a good amount of air through a compressed mattress.
We gave the Amerisleep AS4 Mattress a 9 out of 10 for temperature control. It doesn’t perform quite so well as they make it out to and that is a little disappointing.

This mattress doesn’t come with a fantastic sleep trial. It adheres to the industry standard and gives you a no-risk, no obligation to buy trial that last for one hundred days. This is industry standard and isn’t particularly spectacular; but it does allow you to test out the mattress across a couple of seasons. This will give you a more accurate sense of temperature regulation and if you want to commit to purchase or not.
As well as giving you a one hundred night sleep trial, the Amerisleep AS4 also comes with a twenty year warranty against defective parts and sagging. If anything should go wrong with your mattress and it is the manufacturers fault then you will be able to return it and get a new one. All returns are free if they aren’t your fault or you don’t want to go ahead with the purchase, so it shouldn’t even cost you anything.
We gave the Amerisleep AS4 a 9 out of 10 for trials and warranty. It’s not perfect, but it’s not bad either. Those twenty years of guarantee go at least part of the way towards making up for the limits that the sleep trial has.
Overall Summary
We think this is a fairly sound product that performs well in the areas it is supposed to. Parts we don’t like include edge support and temperature, even although the firm themselves claim the temperature of the mattress to be fairly cool. What we do like is that Celiant fabric cover, the good air flow through the mattress and the different zoned layers they have used in the construction. We also adore the nod towards eco-friendly processing by eliminating some of the petroleum normally used in production.
With all of this in mind, we gave the Amerisleep AS4 a high overall value and recommendation. We think it is a little pricey for what it does. That being said this is the perfect mattress for side sleepers or for those who need extra sinkage… and it might be the perfect mattress for you.
