Pillar Sleep Mattress Review

Pillar Sleep is a mattress company that specializes in providing high-quality mattresses with a focus on comfort and support. Their flagship product, the Pillar Medium-Soft and Medium-Firm Mattresses, are designed to offer a balance between softness and support for a comfortable sleep experience.

These mattresses are manufactured by ISP/BIA Bedding Interational of America in Chicago IL.  This factory has produced mattresses for several online mattress brands over the years and still continues to manufacture for several brands as well as selling mattresses to thousands of stores around the country with several mattress lines.

Pillar offers 4 different models:

  1. The medium firm single sided mattress.
  2. The medium soft single sided mattress.
  3. A split firmness for couples where they can get each firmness in the same mattress.
  4. Pillar Flip – a 2-sided model built to last longer by being able to spin and flip the mattress.

Delivery, Unboxing & Set-up

After ordering, you need to wait five to ten days on average to receive your brand-new mattress. If you live in the US, you benefit from free shipping.

When you receive your mattress, we recommend taking it into the bedroom before diving in. This is because your lovely new bed can weigh between 110 and 145 lbs. Arriving in a box and vacuum sealed, all you need to do is take a sharp knife and cut away the outer box and the inner wrapping. Step back. Watch your mattress expand into life.

It will possibly take up to 24 hours to expand fully, so make sure you have a backup plan in case it is not fully extended. In our experience, it’s never taken that long. We’ve been snuggled up in our new mattress the night we get it.

You Like the Pillar Sleep Mattress if You:

  • I feel like these mattresses, as they market have a very nice balance of softness and support.  Especially the medium firm.  You have good pressure relief but still maintain great support and spinal alignment.  The medium soft still has support as well, where I find some softer mattresses my butt will sink in too far, these both still have good support.
  • The price with coupon for a queen is $1499, which is very competitive when you compare this to other mattresses that are 14-15″ thick.  This packs a lot of foam into the design compared to many of them as well and still stays competitive.
  • One of the main advantages of the Pillar Medium-Soft Mattress is its construction. The mattress is designed with multiple layers of foam that provide a soft and comfortable sleep surface.
  • It offers a medium-soft or medium firm firmness level, which is ideal for those who prefer a plush and contouring feel or a bit more firmness for those who like to sleep more on the mattress compared to in the mattress.
  • I think the 6″ of foam helps with better motion reduction.
  • The cooling cover is very cold to the touch.
  • The overall mattress sleeps cool, with quilting foam separating you from the memory foam it helps with heat.  The memory foam is also copper infused which does not trap heat like regular memory foam as much.

You Might Not Like the Pillar Sleep Mattress if You:

  • Some people may find the mattress to be too thick at 15″
  • The brand is newer, although the factory is not.
  • Neither are very firm, so if you are seeking a very firm mattress neither of these will likely work great for you.

Pillar Sleep Comfort & Feel

The flagship Pillar 1-sided mattresses come in two firmness levels.  With 6 inches of comfort foams above the coils this mattress packs a lot of foam in, which in my opinion is a good thing for motion reduction, and comfort.

The Pillar Medium-Soft Mattress is designed to provide a comfortable sleep experience. The combination of multiple foam layers creates a plush and contouring surface that conforms to the body’s curves, relieving pressure points and promoting proper spinal alignment. The medium-soft firmness level strikes a good balance between sinkage and support, providing a cozy and cushioned feel.  The zoned coil unit still provides a nice balance of support paired with the softer comfort layers.

The medium firm was my favorite during our testing.  Your body does not sink in quite as much so I feel like it supports a little more and will sleep cooler.  Also, for my weight at 200lbs it provides a better support for back sleeping but is still soft enough for side sleeping.

Pressure Relief

When you are looking for a mattress, you need to consider how much relief the bed would give you. Getting this right will mean that you wake up refreshed and ache-free, which is what we all want. The Pillar performs well for people who like to sleep on their back or sides.

Both firmness’s offer great pressure relief with 6″ of foam above the coils.  The soft is best for those who like softer mattresses but also for those lighter people who will not sink in as easy.  Even the firmer options have a nice softness on top and provides pressure relief but with a bit more support underneath.

Motion Isolation

Hybrid mattresses with pocketed independent coils are a huge improvement on a traditional innerspring but not quite as good as an all foam. The motion transfer on this mattress is pretty good. You will not feel a ton of movement but will feel some. It’s not something that should be concerning or make your choice difficult.

With 6″ of coils paired with the pocketed coils this performs VERY well with motion.  The balance of pressure relief and support is just about perfect.  Most brands only have 3-5 inches of foam, and 5 is typically rare.

You should have no issues with motion transfer.

Off Gassing

Pillar is a CertiPUR mattress. Given that the CertiPUR certification is a voluntary one, it shows that this mattress is entirely safe. The slight smell that you may get off your brand-new mattress is simply due to manufacturing. We always recommend CertiPUR mattresses to anyone worried about chemical and toxins, and the Pillar fits this profile perfectly. Both the dynamic foam and the polyfoam used are considered very safe and will have little impact on your home’s air quality. Any smell usually dissipates and diminish in a couple of days, leaving you well-rested and refreshed.

Edge Support

One of the drawbacks to a traditional hybrid mattresses is the lack of support around the edges. With the Pillar,  you don’t get that. Pillar offers extra support and extra reinforcement around the edges. This provides comfort and support if you prefer to sleep nearer the edge of the bed. Or you are putting your socks on, ready for the day.

Most brands only have stronger edge coils on the sides, Pillar has them all the way around.  Plus the zoned center.

You will not experience a roll off the bed feeling when laying down close to the edge.

Pillar Sleep Mattress Construction

The Pillar Medium-Soft Mattress features a multi-layer construction. The top layer consists of a soft quilted cover that adds a luxurious feel and enhances overall comfort. Beneath the cover, there are layers of memory foam and polyurethane foam that work together to provide cushioning, pressure relief, and body contouring. The mattress is designed to evenly distribute weight and minimize motion transfer, promoting undisturbed sleep.

1. Durable Breathable Cover

2. 2″ Suspend Quilting Foam

3. 2″ of Medium Soft Copper Infused Cooling Foam

4. 2″ HD Medium Support Foam

5. 8″ Tri-zone Wrapped Pocketed Coils

6. 1″ Base Foam

Pillar Sleep Mattress Cover

This mattress also comes with a soft and breathable knit cover that helps to provide even more comfort for when you fall asleep but you can upgrade to the cooling cover which is very cold to the touch.  This hypoallergenic GlacierICE fabric is made from fibers with high thermal conductivity that allow heat to be quickly and effectively pulled away from your body.

Pillar Sleep works on

The Pillar mattresses will work great on any solid surface. The floor, platform slats, boxspring/foundation and they now offer an adjustable base as well.

Temperature:

The mattress is designed with breathable foams and a quilted cover that promote airflow and help dissipate heat, which can contribute to a cooler sleep experience. Also, the memory foam is copper infused which sleep much cooler than traditional memory foam.
The cooling cover also makes a huge difference when you first lay down, it is very cold to the touch. I think this cover is also more durable and will not pill over time like the traditional one may.

Adjustable Base Performance:

The Pillar mattresses will work great on any adjustable base.  We show a Pillar on an adjustable in our stores.

Pillar Sleep offer some great trials and warranties on their mattresses so we were a little surprised to see that this mattress comes with a 120 night risk free, no obligation trial of the mattress. While this is a fairly good deal it is industry standard… meaning that it’s pretty much the same deal as you would expect from the other big brands. In fact; we have almost become used to the extra 10 nights most are now offering.

Conclusion

In conclusion, Pillar offers a comfortable very well-built lineup of mattresses. With its multi-layer construction, it provides excellent pressure relief, motion isolation, and contouring support.  I think the construction, feel and quality of these mattresses are better than many online brands and they still maintain a good price point.  I think firmness wise most people will like of the mattresses, unless you need something very firm.  I would recommend these for anyone seeking a mattress that sleep cool, and provides a nice balance of plushness and support.
