Summary

I’ve had a lot of people asking about the Purple.  Mainly because you can’t shop online right now without seeing one of their creative marketing ads.  Purple uses a hyper-elastic polymer on the top layer of their mattress.  It’s designed to have very good pressure relief.  I thought the mattress was interesting but I also had some concerns.

You will like Purple if you:

  • Like to sleep cool – The Hyper Elastic Polymer layer did not get excessively hot for us at all.  Kayla is typically always cold so heat was not an issue for her either.

  • Are looking for a mattress to fit all sleeping positions – Purple has a firmness that will work good for those of you who like to sleep in all 3 positions throughout the night.

  • Are looking for great pressure relief – Purple’s Polymer layer is great for pressure relief. The Polymer layer collapses where you need the most pressure relief.

You might not like Purple if you:

  • Want proof of durability –  Being a mattress design that has not been tested for many years like latex of memory foam, one can question how the durability of Purple will be.

  • Want good edge support – The grid tends to collapse outward when laying close to the edge which gives you more of an ejected feeling.

Purple Mattress Construction

The Purple mattress sits at 9.5″ thick and is built from 3 layers of foam & polymer.

  • Top layer provides cooling & comfort – 2″ of a hyper-elastic polymer. This layer is designed to provide a cool sleeping surface as well as relieve pressure points. The hyper-elastic polymer is built using Purple “smart grid” design.

  • 2nd layer – transitional support – 3.5″ of polyurethane foam.

  • Bottom layer -foundation – 4″ of polyurethane foam. This layer is designed to act as the foundation for the mattress.

My thoughts (Ross)

Purple was definitely a new experience.  The feel to me is a floating, sleeping on top of the mattress feel vs more of a body hug feel.  It slept cool and had good pressure relief.  I was not impressed with how easily it bottoms out.  It shows me their foam core could start to sag sooner.

The Purple Mattress impressed me for the following reasons.

A.) Slept cool

B.) Good pressure relief.

C.) A firmness suitable for all positions.

Her thoughts (Kayla)

For me the Purple worked well.  I am a lighter person at 125lbs and the grid collapsed and conformed well for me.  I am the type of person who prefers more of a body hug feel vs a floating feel however.  I tend to sleep cold so I like a little more hug than Purple offered.  Overall I think its a good mattress for pressure relief. I don’t like the idea that the design is not proven for longevity.

Temperature:

The Hyper Elastic Polymer layer does not trap heat like a foam layer can.  It still warms to you body temp after some time but it doesn’t radiate or trap heat as much as some foams can.  The cover is also thin enough to allow air flow.  We had no issues getting overheated on the Purple mattress.

Adjustable Base Performance:

Purple will perform great on an adjustable base.  (video coming soon)

The Purple mattress exploded on to the mattress scene in 2016 with aggressive and clever marketing videos that were all over online.  Three years ago, the creators, the Pearces set out to combine all their knowledge of cushioning into the world’s best mattress. Hyper-Elastic Polymer™ had never been able to be molded into pieces as large as king-sized mattresses. Even with only partial surface coverage, the mattresses made in Australia and Europe were too expensive to help millions of people get more comfortable. To make great mattresses, the whole surface needed to be Hyper-Elastic Polymer™, and the mattresses needed to be produced at high rates with low labor input. The Pearces needed something totally new to achieve their dream.

Overall Summary

Overall the Purple provides very good pressure relief and sleep exceptionally cool.  It also works good for people who sleep in all 3 sleeping positions.  In my opinion it may bottom out easily for people over 250lbs and I would recommend something different if you are in that category.  The deg support for me was an issue where the grid collapses outward and makes you feel less supported on the edge. I also feel like the mattress is able to bottom out pretty easily and the foam core was rather squishy.
