We would say this mattress is a medium-firm mattress as the coils offer a lot of support to the sleeper. If you’re looking for something softer, then we say consider other mattresses. Maybe think about the original Purple mattress.
We would consider this mattress perfect for side sleepers as we feel it offers the balance of comfort and support that we know side sleepers need. The polymer grid does a great job supporting the shoulders and hips while you sleep, meaning you are less likely to wake stiff.
If you sleep on your back/stomach, then this mattress will be perfect for you. The combination of support coils and the foam offers a lot of support for you, keeping your spine in the correct position. We always felt supported when we tried the bed.
If you’re any combination of the above, then this mattress, of course, would be perfect for you. The polymer grid is extra responsive and snaps back into position after you move. This responsiveness means that it is perfect for people who switch between positions.
If you are an active sleeper, then we think the motion isolation for this mattress is splendid. The materials that Purple have used give extra buoyancy and a responsive feel. This feel will mean that any movement felt is reduced considerably. We think this is good news if you sleep with a partner; if you are tossing and turning or just getting out of bed, your partner won’t be disturbed too much. The individual coils also stop the motion transfer as the movement of one coil won’t impact the others around it, meaning less disturbance. A perfect night sleep for all.

Set-up of the Purple mattress is simple enough. The fact that it’s free is a bonus. While the free White Glove delivery service is a nice touch that many will find useful.
To avoid off-gassing, open the bed from its packaging as soon as it arrives. Keeping it in the box will likely concentrate the smells of the packed materials.
Some people don’t realize off-gassing is a thing. You wouldn’t say a new book shows signs of off-gassing, even though there is actually a ‘new book smell’. Likewise, some people notice a new mattress smell, and refer to this as off-gassing.
If you are particularly sensitive to new furniture smells, just stand the mattress up in a well ventilated room and allow it to air out for around 24-36 hours. By this time any scents or odours should be completely gone. Mattress protectors and sheets can then be applied and any smells from the fabric of your mattress will be undetectable.

The luxury bedding market may be seeing more of this material in the coming years given the popularity of the Purple.
Beneath the Smart Grid is a layer of Specialized Comfort Foam, which acts as the transition layer between the polymer and coil layers, while also extending out to the edges to aid in providing edge support.
The Purple Hybrid uses many layers as part of its construction. Using a combination of foam and coils to create its supportive feel helps with the durability of this mattress as all the pressure isn’t just on the foam; it is being shared with the coils.
The first layer you will find with any mattress is the cover. This cover is made from Viscose, Polyester and Lycra (Viscose is made using wood pulp, making it into a fiber like cotton or linen), making this breathable and stretchy. This stretchy feel allows the cover to move with the mattress, meaning it is less likely to pull away when the sleeper moves during the night. Air is allowed to circulate rather than being trapped by this cover due to how breathable it is.
Below the cover, you will find the comfort layer. This layer is made up of a polymer grid made from hyper-elastic polymers, which allow for extra comfort and support. You have the option of two depths of this purple gird, three-inch or four-inch. What depth you get depends on how much contouring you want from your mattress. Your body’s heat, like memory foam, will mold to your body after a few minutes, offering you the most support.
The next layer you will encounter will be the one-inch transition layer made using polyfoam, which stops you from sleeping directly on top of the coil layer. This coil layer is 7.5-inches thick and made using pocketed coils, which allows for added support and extra bounce. The pocketed coils allow for an increase in airflow and breathability. Below this is a final layer of foam to support the coils and added to the overall support of the mattress.

Purple will work great on any solid surface. The floor, platform slats, boxspring/foundation and they now offer an adjustable base as well.
We think that the main strength of the Purple Hybrid is how well it does at control temperature. When you buy a typical foam mattress, the foam traps heat against the sleeper’s body. The Purple Hybrid doesn’t have this issue, and the construction helps keep you cool all night long.
The cover used is breathable and allows for better airflow throughout the mattress. The heat that would build up is allowed to dissipate into the atmosphere through the air channels that are in the comfort grid. The coil layer also allows air to flow through and circulate, pulling the heat further from the body. The Hybrid sleeps exceptionally cooler than most mattresses, thanks to this design.
Well, this is a hybrid and so probably isn’t going to be breaking records for motion reduction, at least not compared to all-foam mattresses.
One thing that can be said for the Purple is that the coil layer is cushioned on both sides by ultra-durable polyurethane foam, while the mesh side-panel and generous edge-support foam also work to create a compact unit which only moves as much as it has to.
However, the Smart Comfort Grid also comes in to play here, as the lattice structure allows for motion isolation, and means that the bed will only react where you need it to. Each little square in the grid structure can react on its own, so even though this is a hybrid, the polymer does somewhat mimic the effects of traditional memory-foam.
Ultimately, the polymer is a little more reactive than memory-foam, and doesn’t achieve complete and total motion isolation. But it presents no particular issues, and performs better than most hybrids out there.
The Purple Hybrid is part foam, as you’d expect from a Hybrid mattress. Like the majority of Hybrid mattresses, edge support has been a problem that needed solving. The Purple’s edge is supported by the coil layer, which improves the support around the edges. We think that the edge support is typical for this kind of mattress; not unsupportive yet not record-breaking.
Most sleepers who try this mattress will be able to sit or lie near the edge of the bed without excessive sinkage. This means you can use the entire surface of the mattress when you are using it. Depending on your weight, it will depend on how much sinkage you experience, and if you are heavier, you will sink further. We don’t feel this will be a big problem for most users; however, so it shouldn’t be an issue.
