Quick Overview

Nectar:

The Nectar Mattress is already well known, has a fair amount of followers and has over 5K reviews on its site. Their website is accessible, easy to use and looks like a professional put it together. It doesn’t have annoying pop up ads and it isn’t pushy with the prices. Overall they brand very well, being a company known for reputation and success rather than special deals and freebies.

While Nectar focus on the mattress and their two types of frame, Puffy spread themselves a little thinner by advertising a whole range of sleeping products through their own site. While this is a better deal for them marketing wise, it isn’t necessarily the best thing for us. The branding is good but the site is more complex; they also offer you a popup to join a mailing list and ask your browser if they can send you notifications, and we are not fans of the pushy.

This is an odd one because Puffy should win this category with their awards and certifications; but to us they seem to fall slightly short with too many ads. We give round 1 to Nectar, for being so very well rounded.

Puffy:

When it comes to the top selling mattresses on the market we really know our stuff, and two current customer favorites are the Puffy Mattress and the Nectar Mattress. While the Nectar is favored for its durable memory foam and cooling technology; the puffy is favored for its durable memory foam and cooling technology – so this is going to be a tough competition.

First impressions are that the Nectar beast Puffy slightly in affordability but by comparison, the Puffy won awards for being one of the best sleep products of 2018. They also donate all of their unwanted mattresses to children’s charities, which touches the heartstrings as well as endearing them to us.

Let’s take a closer look at these two mattresses, compare them by category and see who comes out on top.

Delivery, Unboxing & Set-up

Delivery of either mattress is free and they will both be with you within 8-10 working days. Your mattress will arrive rolled up and vacuum packed into a box – a new method of transportation that reduces the carbon footprint of the transportation. Once delivered simply bring it to the room you want it in before you unpack.

To unpack the box simply cut through it with a sharp tool, but be extra careful when cutting away the plastic so that you do not cut the delicate fabric of the bed. Once all of the packaging has been removed step back and watch your mattress grow!

The mattress will be fully expanded within 24 hours of you unpacking it but you will be able to put sheets on it and use it before then.

Since both mattresses are delivered in the same way we have no choice but to call this round a draw.

Build quality, warranty, trial period and the overall feel are above average. The overall feel and quality of the foam in the Nectar is impressive for the price. It is one of the best-made in relation to how much they price it. It’s better quality than dozens of other available options online, and the value for money is what makes it stand out than most of them.

Comfort & Feel

Nectar:

The Nectar mattress is a medium-firm mix of memory foams that has a one inch top layer that makes the whole surface that little bit softer. This top layer is cooling-gel infused and works to keep you from overheating during the night. While the other foams are pretty dense this top layer is not, and is meant to provide surface comfort throughout. Their fabric is lightweight and breathable and is made from their own patented Tencil materials.

Puffy:

The Puffy Mattress also has cooling technology woven into those top layers, they call this the Cooling Cloud Gel and it is also infused into the memory foam. This bed has slightly less layers and has been designed to support all of the pressure points of sleepers no matter their position. That being said, it is a little softer than the Nectar and allows for more sinkage as you sleep, although both contour to the body.

When it comes to comfort and feel it is a tough competition. The Nectar gives us cooling and firmness while the Puffy gives us cooling and a little more sinkage. If you have a bad back go for the Nectar, if you like to be wrapped in your bedding then the Puffy will suit you better.

Motion Isolation

Nectar:

Since both of these mattresses are made from durable memory foam, both offer rather superb motion reduction. The Nectar has that medium firm dense foam that makes for very limited motion transfer, and consumers report the ability to sleep through partners waking in the night. It has been specially designed in order to soak up any weight pressed on it and disperse it evenly among the rest of the mattress. Sleep disruptions are kept to a minimal and we couldn’t find a single review that says otherwise.

Puffy:

The Puffy mattress offers more in terms of sinkage because of its medium firmness, This means that, should your partner sink, you might too – especially if they are heavier than you. The mattress has minimal bounce which isn’t a bad thing but does depend on what you are looking for. The Nectar also has minimum bounce.

We preferred the Nectar for motion reduction, almost entirely because it is that little bit firmer so that it prevents you from rolling into your partner while you sleep. On the other hand the Puffy is perfect for cuddlers.

Off Gassing

Off-gassing to us is a deceptive term because we feel that any new product will smell of the factory until it has been in your home or used for a while. This is normal and happens with both of these mattresses. It is similar to a new shoe smell and will dissipate within 24-36 hours of the mattress being placed in your home.

Once you have placed a mattress protector (which we would always recommend) and your sheets onto the bed any lingering scent should be barely noticeable at all. Strangely, organic or natural mattresses will give off the most smell. This is due to their materials but you should not be affected by this with either of these mattresses.

Since off-gassing in both of these products is very much the same we have to award our second draw and move on to the next round.

Edge Support

Nectar:

The Nectar is actually quite well known in the industry for having one of the better edge support systems found in memory foam beds. Memory foam is very pliable and tends to conform to the shape of the body, so when you sit on a memory foam bed you will sink down, regardless of whether you are in the middle or on the edge. While this is true of most, the Nectar Mattress gets around it by being made of tougher stuff, and its medium-firm rating really helps it out when it comes to edge support.

Puffy:

Unfortunately we can’t say the same about the Puffy. While the base layer is supportive that top layer is only medium density foam, and that makes for a fair amount of sinkage when you sit on the edge. If edge support is important to you or if you suffer from aches and pains when trying to stand up then the Puffy is probably not the mattress for you.

In terms of edge support we found the Nectar just takes the lead, even though both beds wont score particularly highly for this category.

Materials

Nectar:

The Nectar Mattress sports an 11 inch thick and heavy structure that won’t slide about and can be used on any bed frame. The base layer is made up of 1 ¾ inch of thick, near solid foam, that supports a 5 ¼ inch layer of slightly less dense foam, These too layers make it tough and durable while helping longevity. Next comes a three inch layer of their medium firm foam followed by that top inch of slightly softer, coolant infused foam that will keep you from sweating at night. The fabric in the top layer is made from their patented Tencil materials mixed with Cotton and Lyocell. All three materials promote breathability and let the body benefit from the cooling layer.

Puffy:

The Puffy Mattress has gone for a somewhat simpler construction and opted for a mere two layers. It rivals the Nectar in terms of thickness and matches its 11 inches. While the top layer is made of medium firm polyurethane with cooling gel infused that provides a lot of sinkage. The bottom half of the mattress is made from a denser support foam that utilizes their Cloud Sleep technology to provide maximum support to all the different pressure points.

With the materials used both beds are very similar, so to make our decision we turned to construction.  We find the Nectar Mattress to be the winner of the materials category.  I think the main thing is that its thicker and the foam core seems to be more dense.  But both are great mattresses.

Foundation

The Nectar and Purple will work great on any solid surface.  The floor, platform slats, boxspring/foundation and they now offer an adjustable base as well.

mattress bases

Temperature:

Nectar:

Now both of these mattresses have taken cooling technology into account and both have done well because of it. The Nectar mattress provides a 1 inch layer of soothing, cooling gel infused foam that is of medium firmness. This softer foam has the dual purpose of cooling while providing a slightly softer coating to the surface area, meaning you get the most out of the memory foam sinkage without actually being swallowed whole by the bed.

Puffy:

The Puffy mattress, on the other hand, sports a four inch top layer that is fully infused with their cooling foam. This foam is of medium softness, meaning you will sink into it and be wrapped in coolness. The Cloud Cooling Foam that they use is fully US made and is even certified by Certipur-US.

Realistically, I think the will both perform about the same for temperature.

Adjustable Base Performance:

The tulo liv will work great on a base being an all foam mattress.

Customer Reviews:

Nectar:

For the Nectar there is more than 5k reviews on their website, carrying a 4.8 out of 5 star overall rating. J.O says “I’ve never bought a mattress sight unseen, but I bought this mattress based mostly on gut and reviews. And guess what? My gut was spot on. Sleeping on this mattress is what I would imagine heaven feels like. I can honestly say this is the best mattress I’ve ever owned.”

While D. G. says “I’m like a teenager again (almost 54 now) not wanting to get out of bed. The only bad thing I can say about it is that I don’t want to leave it. This mattress seems like it is going to last forever, that’s maybe why Nectar offers a lifetime warranty. This is one of the most comfortable mattresses we’ve ever slept on! Definitely worth the price. I HIGHLY recommend this product to everyone.”

Puffy:

For the Puffy mattress we found around 4 thousand reviews with a 90% successful 5 star rating. We’re not quite sure what the percentage is but we are happy to report an overwhelming customer support of the product. Julie Balsamo says “This mattress really is very comfortable. It’s firm but sinks in just enough to be totally cozy. I’ve had issues in the past with beds hurting my shoulders when I sleep on my side, but it’s been over a month with my puffy, and my shoulders have been feeling great!”

While Racheal Cameron says “I have a lot of lower back discomfort from being a nurse who works with young kids (bending constantly). I used to toss and turn a lot to try to get comfortable but I have had several nights where I have not moved at all from my original sleep position. This has never happened for me! I was nervous buying this mattress without trying it out first but the return guarantee gave me peace of mind, even though I won’t be needing it!”

We think both mattresses do equally well in terms of customer reviews, and we are loathe to pick a winner.

Warranty and More

Nectar:

The Nectar is actually industry renowned for its 365 night trial period. This goes above and beyond the industry standard of 110 nights and allows you to try out your new mattress across all four seasons. They also offer a forever warranty, meaning that you can expect to have your faulty mattress replaced at any point over the course of your lifetime, once purchased. They offer free returns and shipping and donate their old returned mattresses to charity. All in all, it is one of the best deals out there.

Puffy:

But there is, perhaps, only one thing that can beat it… the fact that Puffy donate all their unwanted mattresses to Children. There are far few more worthy causes than a needy child. Although they only offer a 101 night sleep trial, which we think is a little too short, they do still give you the ability to test out the mattress over one or two seasons at least. They also provide a lifetime guarantee against any defects in their product, which nobody here is complaining about.

When it comes to trial and warranty Nectar provide the best deal, but for goodness sake – think of the children and support our decision to let Puffy have this round as a win.

Conclusion

Overall Summary

When it comes to actually deciding between these two the competition is fierce and we are not sure how to pick a favorite. In the end, it all comes down to the individual customers specifications. If you want a cooling mattress that has all the sinkable benefit of memory foam but without the hot sleep then you need the Nectar Mattress. However, if you have aches and pains and want a responsive and supportive structure to cradle you while you sleep you want the Purple Bed Mattress.

What we can tell you is that if you buy either one of these you do have a suitable trial period to switch it if you so chose. Either product will give you a good deal and a quality sleep; it really is all down to what you prefer as a sleeper.

We would recommend either mattress so try them for yourselves and let us know what you think in the comments.
