Helix Dusk Luxe Mattress Review

Did you know we spend 26 years of our lives asleep? So, the right mattress is essential. So, is Helix worth the hype?

We had a look at all of the most reliable reviews and blended them with our personal experience to create the most comprehensive guide to allow you to make the best choice and give you the best night sleep!

Helix uses several layers to create their mattresses, giving a wide range of personalisation and tailoring the bed to meet your individual needs. What’s more is that you can combine comfort levels between partners, ensuring you and your loved one get the best night sleep.

What to Look For?

So, what should you look for in a mattress? Before we get into the review, let us look at what you should be looking for.

The first thing we think you should look at is the firmness and support that the mattress provides. This all depends on how you sleep. For side sleepers, we recommend either a softer mattress or a medium. Back sleepers should look for Medium/Medium Firm, and if you like to sleep on your front, you should be looking for a firm mattress as this offers the most support for your spine.

Construction is the next thing you should consider, whether you go for a foam mattress, a hybrid, or a traditional spring mattress. Memory foam moulds to your body and spread your weight over the bed rather than in one place. Spring mattresses offer a lot of support and a bouncy feel, which sleep ‘cooler’ than your typical memory foam mattress. Hybrids are a nice balance between the two.

Durability is probably the most significant thing we think you should consider. We believe a good quality mattress should last eight years before it needs replacing; this can be longer if you rotate your mattress every six months to ensure even wear.

How well the mattress regulates your temperature is also an excellent thing to consider when purchasing your new mattress. Generally, memory foam mattresses retain heat, making them perfect for the winter or needing that extra warmth. Whereas pocket sprung mattresses tend to be cooler as they have better airflow. This is something to think about.

It would be best to look for one that spreads your body weight evenly, relieving pressure on sore spots like your back, shoulder and hips. If you get the wrong mattress, you can wake up painful and uncomfortable and not sleep as well as you could.

We think the last thing you should consider when purchasing your mattress is the warranty it comes with. The majority of beds are covered up to ten years after you buy them. The top of the range mattresses can exceed twenty years. Mattresses that come with a short warranty indicate that the company is not confident in their mattress or the lifespan.

So, now we know what makes a good buy, let us have a look at the Helix and see how well it fares up and see if this may be the right mattress for you.

Branding

Helix offers a mattress that is entirely made to order. This is founded on the idea that everyone’s sleep is personal to them, so they should have a personalised bed that fulfil their needs and requirements.

Helix has revolutionised a system that traditional we feel was a little awkward, with an unpleasant showroom experience. Their goal was to change this. By showing an understanding that mattresses were not one size fits all, they can tap into the market that was crying out for persona mattresses. That would solve their customer problems.

They understood that when buying a large purchase like a mattress, a lot of consideration and research needed to happen. Helix was able to help their customers by providing all the relevant knowledge without any of the ‘fluff’ that many other companies were trying to push.

Besides focusing on providing the best night sleep by customisation, Helix researched and developed the best materials and massively invested in developing the best mattress that they could.

With this high level of customer care and understanding of their needs, we had no choice but to give them a high mark. It’s a 9/10 for us.

Delivery, Unboxing & Set-up

After ordering, you need to wait ten days on average to receive your brand-new mattress. If you live in the US, you benefit from free shipping, though from what we discovered, you may need to wait for a little if you live outside the US and Canada.

When you receive your mattress, we recommend taking it into the bedroom before diving in. This is because your lovely new bed can weigh between 50 and 145 lbs. Arriving in a box and vacuum sealed, all you need to do is take a sharp knife and cut away the outer box and the inner wrapping. Step back. Watch your mattress expand into life.

It will possibly take up to 24 hours to expand fully, so make sure you have a backup plan in case it is not fully extended. In our experience, it’s never taken that long. We’ve been snuggled up in our new mattress the night we get it.

Difference between the Helix Midnight Luxe and Dusk Luxe

The Midnight Luxe and Dusk Luxe are very similar.  The only difference is the top layer of foam that us under the quilting foam.
The midnight uses a Copper Infused Memory Foam.  This type of foam will be cooler than regular memory foam.
The Dusk uses a foam that they call Dynamic Foam, which is a poly foam (should be cheaper then the copper memory foam). This will be cooler than regular memory foam too.
  • They rate then the same for firmness.  With the only difference being on a 1 inch layer of foam they will likely feel very very similar, even with the foams being different in that one layer.
  • The Midnight will likely have lower motion transfer since it is using memory foam on that top layer rather than poly foam.  I would also say it will have better pressure relief.
  • The Dusk likely has a bit more of a loft feel since poly foam is a bit springier than memory foam.

You Like the Helix Dusk Luxe Mattress if You:

  • You love memory foam but don’t like the feeling of getting stuck, the top layer is a poly foam.
  • You like the support and bounce of springs but also like to not feel your partner moving around.  This mattresses pocketed coils reduce motion compared to traditional mattresses.
  • Are a combination sleeper.  This mattress has a true medium feel and will work for most sleepers in all sleeping positions.
  • You like a good balance of pressure relief and support.  You do not sink way into the mattress but it has good pressure relief and good support at the same time.  This model may have a bit more of a lseeping “on” the mattress than the midnight since it uses more poly foam than memory foam.
  • Want zoned support.  The center of the mattress has firmer coils for good support where you need it most.

You Might Not Like the Helix Dusk Luxe Mattress if You:

  • Prefer to sleep on an all foam mattress without coils.
  • Want more of a memory foam feel (the midnight luxe uses more)
  • Want something super firm or super soft.  This mattress is right in the middle.

Helix Dusk Luxe Comfort & Feel

When you first lay down on this mattress you will notice a subtle quilting pattern.  I like this because it has an almost smooth top but still has quilting foam on top.  You don’t feel big indentations where the quilt stitching is on many other brands.

Right when you lay down you will sink into the comfort foams, not too much to where it will sleep hot but enough for great pressure relief.  It has a 5-6 out of 10 feel with 10 being the firmest.

The nest thing you will notice once you are laying there is the support.  It has a nice feel, not too soft not too firm and you can feel the zoned support the coil unit offers.  It has extra support at your midsection where most of your body weight is.  This is great for you back and also for the longevity of the mattress.

The overall feel of this mattress will be loved by the majority of people.

Pressure Relief

When you are looking for a mattress, you need to consider how much relief the bed would give you. Getting this right will mean that you wake up refreshed and ache-free, which is what we all want. The Helix Sunset performs well for people who like to sleep on their back or sides. We would not recommend this mattress for stomach sleepers as we don’t think it offers adequate support for your spine.

With 4 layers of comfort foams consisting of quilting foam, 2 layers of memory foam and a support foam layer all above the coils this mattress has very good pressure relief without being too soft.  The balance of pressure relief and support is just about perfect.

Motion Isolation

Hybrid mattresses with pocketed independent coils are a huge improvement on a traditional innerspring but not quite as good as an all foam. The motion transfer on this mattress is pretty good. You will not feel a ton of movement but will feel some. It’s not something that should be concerning or make your choice difficult.

You should have no issues with motion transfer.

Off Gassing

Helix is a CertiPUR mattress. Given that the CertiPUR certification is a voluntary one, it shows that this mattress is entirely safe. The slight smell that you may get off your brand-new mattress is simply due to manufacturing. We always recommend CertiPUR mattresses to anyone worried about chemical and toxins, and the Helix fits this profile perfectly. Both the dynamic foam and the polyfoam used are considered very safe and will have little impact on your home’s air quality. Any smell usually dissipates and diminish in a couple of days, leaving you well-rested and refreshed.

We gave the Helix 10/10 for off-gassing because they have done everything to ensure that the mattress is non-toxic and safe.

Edge Support

One of the drawbacks to a traditional hybrid mattresses is the lack of support around the edges. With the Helix,  you don’t get that. Helix offers extra support and extra reinforcement around the edges. This provides comfort and support if you prefer to sleep nearer the edge of the bed. Or you are putting your socks on, ready for the day.

The added support around the edge solves the problem that most memory foam mattresses have, sagging. The base offers consistent support from one side of the bed to the other. We think this is vital in a good night’s sleep, as you are guaranteed support, whether you sleep in the centre of the bed or more towards the edge. Perfect for you couples out there.

You may notice the edge of the bed compress and sink when you either sit on or move over the edge, but mainly just the comfort layers.  Once you hit the reinforced edges of the coil unit you will feel the support.

You will not expereince a roll off the bed feeling when laying down close to the edge.

Helix Dusk Luxe Mattress Construction

Let us delve into the materials that make this mattress so comfy. The Helix’s overall construction is geared towards offering maximum comfort and the ability to keep cool at night.

Within the cover you will find a layer of quilting foam.  This foam provides a nice plush feel on top.

Next there is a 1″ layer of Poly Foam

Next you will find 2″ of cooling memory foam.

Under that a layer of support poly foam

Next the 8″ zoned coil unit

Finally on bottom, a support base foam.

Helix Dusk Luxe Mattress Cover

This mattress also comes with a soft and breathable knit cover that helps to provide even more comfort for when you fall asleep.

Helix Dusk Luxe MATTRESS FOUNDATION

The Helix mattreses will work great on any solid surface. The floor, platform slats, boxspring/foundation and they now offer an adjustable base as well.

Softness-firmness Level: 6
1 Very Soft
5 Medium
10 Very Firm

Helix Dusk Luxe Temperature:

The Dusk uses a Premium quilted top for extra comfort with a choice between our ultra breathable TENCEL™ cover or GlacioTex Cooling Cover to keep you cooler

The memory foam in this mattress is a cooling memory foam but above that is a quilting foam layer.  Although the memory foam performs pretty well for cooling I like that there is a quilting foam on top to provide separation from the memory foam.  The quilting foam does not trap heat at all.

You should find this mattress sleeps cool for sure.  Also, the fact that you do not sink super deep into the mattress also helps you sleep cooler.

Adjustable Base Performance:

The Helix mattresses will work great on any adjustable base.  The pocketed coils will bend and flex without hurting the mattress.

My daughter loves her mattress! It’s comfortable and perfect. It was perfectly sized on her bed to hide that annoying space under the headboard. This mattress was well worth the cost.

Helix Sleep offer some great trials and warranties on their mattresses so we were a little surprised to see that this mattress comes with a 100 night risk free, no obligation trial of the mattress. While this is a fairly good deal it is industry standard… meaning that it’s pretty much the same deal as you would expect from the other big brands. In fact; we have almost become used to the extra 10 nights most are now offering.

As for warranty; the Nightfall comes with a ten year guarantee. While this also sounds great it is the same result as last time. We like to see lifetime guarantees to score that perfect ten. We did also notice that they throw in free shipping which is a nice touch. Their warranty covers things like sagging (as long as a proper base has been used) tears in the fabric and indentations that won’t go away – basically any construction defaults with the bed. If something does go wrong, however, they will pick it up and replace it all for free.
