Trundle beds are a great solution to add more sleeping spaces without taking up space in your bedrooms.
Trundle beds consist of a bed frame on wheels which fits (with its mattress) beneath an ordinary bed, or beneath a specialized bed like a bunk bed or daybed. Trundle beds are usually twin-sized, and most keep a low-profile after being rolled out, though others “pop up” to become taller and more even with the main mattress.

They say to use 5-6″ mattresses, the bottom mattress must be in that range. The top can be thicker but be mindful that you do not want it to be thicker or almost as thick as the rails on top or it may not look great. I would try to keep the top mattress 10″ or less. 8′ would be ideal and give you more comfort on the main mattress compared to a 5-6″ mattress.

If you do the measurements and buy the right mattresses you can get the popup to be close in height to the top mattress which is great for adults to make a larger mattress for couples to sleep together. Trundle bed buyers guide
There are a few types of trundle options to consider.
Trundle Only:
This is the cheapest way to get a trundle. Generally they come in 2 different variations.
- Roll out trundle
- Pop-up trundle
These are great additions for added sleeping spots for the least amount of money.
Daybed Trundles:
Daybeds are a combination of sofa and bed. Many are enclosed on three sides, with a high “back” which supports pillows when being used as a sofa. Popular both as occasional beds or full-time beds, daybeds can be very comfortable and come in many designs.
These are available in twin with twin trundles, full with a twin trundle and queen with a full trundle. I recommend the best queen size one above which is a great option for adults.
Bunkbed trundles:
This is a fantastic option for kids, bunk houses, rental properties and more. You already have 2 spots to sleep with a bunkbed but adding in a nice trundle to this set up expands the options and sleeping space even further. While bunk beds can be considered an alternative to a trundle bed, bunk beds with added trundles are a great way to fit sleep several people in a small space. This means your guests will share a room, but for children this is usually a lot of fun.
What to look for in a trundle bed
Materials: What is your bed made of?
For trundles only and bed frames with trundles I would look for options that use either solid steel construction or solid wood with they are using wood. Options that use synthetic materials or particle board can be a very good price if you are thinking short term use for a kid but they will not hold up as well as steel of solid wood.
Mattresses: Buy what helps you sleep best
When selecting mattresses for you trundle be sure to check the maximum thickness that can be under the mattress. If you are buying a new bedframe and trundle combo they should spell out the maximum that can be used. For those of you buying a trundle only, be sure to check the unit height and then measure the space under the bed you already have to determine how thick the mattress can be. I recommend using a foam mattress for the trundle since they will be a thinner mattress, foam will be more comfortable than a thin coiled mattress.
