I felt like this is one of the best built mattresses we have tried and especially for the organic market. Generally to even have button tufting you are looking at high end mattresses. The only ones I sell at my store that use it are my top 3 mattresses or 40 options. SO that’s a high end touch that helps with longevity.
Overall, we have a good experience on the Avocado. The latex felt great and had good body conformance while still maintaining the great bounce latex provides. I also like that it uses a pocketed coil system rather than a foam core. This was the 1st organic innerspring we have tried and I think it helps a lot with cooling, support and bounce compared to if this was just solid latex all the way through.

How each mattress is reviewed and what is rated
As a store owner I know how much “fun” mattress shopping can be. From driving all around town stopping in store after store to be harassed in some cases by sales people to pouring through page after page online. It’s hard to know what is good or what is bad quality. Some mattresses look nice but are not built well. Some are built well but priced way too high. When we created Real Mattress Reviews we want ted to be able to help you with this process of weeding out the bad and discovering the good brands. To do this we look at several factors during our review process before we give a mattress a rating.
We sleep on each mattress for at least a week. I use my expertise in the mattress industry to report on the quality of the materials, build, adjustable base performance and the company. We then, as a his and her team report on comfort, motion transfer, temperature, support, and many other parameters. We do this together to provide you with two different opinions, body weights, and sleeping positions. A true comprehensive mattress review.
- Durability & Materials – This criteria is obvious. You want to find a mattress that uses good quality foams, coils and other components to ensure your mattress lasts. You want to get your money’s worth!
- Comfort & Feel – This is another obvious criteria. Comfort and feel is to a point a personal criteria, but we judge on if a mattress will be liked universally by most people or if they offer several firmness options. We also give our personal opinion on how it performed for us as a 200lbs male and 120lb female.
- Price – This is important for most people. There are some brands that simply are over priced for what you are getting. We want to make sure you are getting the best quality for the money.
- Cooling – Many people tend to sleep hot. For those of you that do we want to make sure we report on how each mattress performs in this important area.
- Motion Transfer – This is important for couples. You don’t want to feel your partner adjusting positions or feel them getting into or out of bed.
- Edge Support – We report on this because you want to be able to use the entire sleeping surface for sleeping (especially on a full or queen with 2 people) without getting a “roll off the bed” feeling.
- Off Gassing – We find some people are really worried about this. Every single mattress we have reviewed has a smell, even “natural” mattresses. I do not put a ton of emphasis on this since any smell generally dissipates in a day or two.
- Warranty & Trial – We love a company that has a strong warranty and trial. This ensures if you have any issues with the mattress falling apart or sagging badly that you have them behind you to take care of the issue. Trials are big with the online market since you cannot try them 1st in most cases. Most of the online brands give you plenty of time to test their mattress out.
- Overall Rating – Finally we take in account everything and provide a mattress rating and our personal opinion on how we liked it.
Top 5 Mattress Types to Avoid
1. Super Cheap Mattresses.
As a store owner I run into this on a daily basis. Because there is demand for inexpensive mattresses for kids or spare rooms or just people with a tight budget I offer them. We are talking Queen Sets (with a foundation) for $195, $279, $339 and so on. A store like mine has actually decent mattresses for those prices compare to big stores but you really need to understand that you’re getting what you pay for.
Some of these mattresses are very comfortable on my show floor and i’ll feel that way for some time. HOWEVER, mattresses in the $200-400 range are not designed to last a long time.
The lack high density foams, the lack a high coil count or thicker gauge coils etc. They are not meant to have 2 adults sleeping on them nightly. They just won’t last long. You’re better off saving and buying something nicer if you’re an adult and its a nightly use mattress.
2. Thin Mattresses
Generally a thinner mattress is thin because it lacks substance. In most cases, a tin or promotional mattress is not going to be very durable. They will usually not get rated very well for comfort and pressure relief since you will sink in less and have less contouring.
The next big issue with thinner mattresses, in my opinion, is that they are not suitable for heavier sleepers 250+ lbs. On a thin mattress in many cases, the core is not very high density otherwise its hard to get the right feel and many people will think its too firm. The same goes for coil units. Therefore on a thinner mattress, heavier people can often bottom out the mattress and they just won’t last as long as they should.
The thickness of your mattress really is a matter of preference, although there are differences for people of different weights.
Heavier people prefer a thicker mattress, at about 11-15 inches. Mattresses of this thickness tend to be medium firm to firm. They are preferred for heavier people because body weight tends to force mattress to conform to the shape of the body. Heavy people also benefit from higher density foam or a higher coil count mattress. Choosing a thinner mattress for a heavy person may lead to the need to replace the mattress more frequently or bottoming out.
Lighter people will do well with a mattress that is eight to ten inches thick; with this thickness, you’ll find a medium to soft firmness. Smaller people can use a lower density foam or lower count coil mattress as well.
3. Low Density Memory Foams
Foam density can be important to your mattresses durability and performance.
As I just noted for foam cores you need a good foam for it to last. The industry standard for a foam core or transitional support layers is 1.8. I would try to buy a mattress with at least that. 2.0 or 2.2 is very good. I have seen a couple that uses a 1.5 density and this was as I noted about thin mattresses used to make the mattress not feel too firm. But what they are doing is sacrificing longevity for initial comfort.
When it comes to memory foam 3.5-4 lb and up is acceptable. 5lb is very good. Some people will actually like the feel of the lower density memory foam better since the reaction time is typically a little faster. 5lb is super durable but often times can feel a little stiff.
Lower density foams will likely develop body impressions and sag faster than higher density foams.
4. Over Priced Mattresses with Tons of Marketing
Since I have been in the industry with my store and now reviewing mattresses I have discovered many big names are better marketers than they are mattress designers. Be wary of brands that spend millions a year on marketing and advertising. Everyone needs to advertise but some brands spend millions a year or perhaps a month. A lot of this cost is passed on to the consumers.
So before you pull the trigger on your mattress it really pays to do some comparing on a site like this to make sure you are not paying $1000 for a mattress that you can get for $600 from another brand. Many have similar construction but have very different prices. ur top picks reflect mattresses that are worth the money.
5. Super soft or Super Firm Mattresses
This is another common occurrence in my store. I’ll have a customer come in and say “show me your softest mattress”. I’ll bring them over to it (it’s very soft) and it happens all time where someone does not think its soft enough.
Here’s the problem with that. Typically to get super soft you use foams that are low density. And a lot of them. This becomes a problem quickly. You will develop body impressions much faster on a very soft mattress. People also do not keep in mind that the mattresses are already naturally going to get softer as they break in
If a super soft mattress is your thing you should buy a firmer mattress and add a mattress topper to it to make it softer. Then once that topper is worn out you can replace it instead of the entire mattress.
Now for a super firm mattress. I don’t see a problem too much with this if that is the firmness a customer wants. But if it is overly firm you generally will not get any contouring on your lower back when back sleeping. Side sleeping you will not have any give for your shoulder or hips and stomach seeping it could irritate your ribs. With that said some people just like a firm mattress. I actually like the same idea of using a topper on a firm mattress and letting the topper wear out rather than the mattress.
Mattress Myths
1. More Coils Always Means Better Quality:
If is widely believed that a higher coil count means you’re getting a better mattress. In my store I have heard this a thousand times when shoppers are trying to compare what I have to the store across the street. Many times it is true but for instance to of my most expensive mattresses on my show floor only have 420 coils, BUT they use 12 gauge steel. The average coil is 14.5 gauge. So the 12 gauge steel coils are much stronger and thicker than the 14.5. This is a hard concept to explain sometimes to a customer when I tell them it has half the amount of coils. I have a coil samples to show people and then they understand. Most stores will tell you 800 or more coils is good. This is a good standard to go by but not all mattresses with less coils are subpar in quality. Now there are also many mattresses using a regular coil unit on bottom and a micro coil unit on top. These micro coils are designed to allow airflow and remove a layer of foam, they can be beneficial. Now you will have stores saying our mattress has 3200 coils, if you hear something outrageous like that as a selling tactic, just know they it most likely is using a micro coil unit and is not necessarily a better mattress.
2. Individually Wrapped Pocketed Coils are Always Better:
Another common thing I hear is sales people always trying to sell people on the pocketed coils. It is true most of the expensive mattresses use this type of coil unit. BUT, there are many high end brands and mattresses that use a traditional interconnected coils unit as well. With pocketed coils, make sure it has 800 or more. In my experience in my store I had 1 couple mattresses that had 696 or 669 pocketed coils and a bunch came back with warranties. I feel if theres not enough pocketed coils they can fail more often than a traditional coil unit. The biggest perk of the pocketed coils is motion reduction for couples, which is great. These coil units are not inherently better however in terms of longevity. I find I have had less warranties with traditional coil units than pocked coil units. So just make sure you are not buying a cheap mattress that uses a pocketed coil unit.
3. The More You Spend the Better the Mattress:
This concept is generally true, however some stores and some brands always have higher prices. Some of the big name brands like Tempupedic, Sealy, Simmons, Serta and some online brands spend millions on advertising. Some of that cost is then paid for in the form of mattress mark-ups by the customers. These brands still have some quality mattresses for fair prices too but do your homework. Most mattress manufacturers buy their foams and coil units from a select few factories so often times you can get a mattress that’s made from a smaller factory like Englander, Symbol or Restonic for a better price without sacrificing quality. Many of these brands can be found in smaller stores like mine or smaller sleep shops tat focus just on mattresses rather than furniture. These smaller stores typically already also have better pricing than the large stores. I run my store as a low-overhead store so its not fancy but I have quality products for good prices.
When it comes to online, use our site. Look at what we recommend and do your homework. Not all brands are saving you money compared to a store but some are.
Hybrid/Innerspring
The coil or innerspring mattress is the most common mattress choice for many beds. They range in price from $300 to $1500. Innerspring mattresses are good for side and back sleepers who are not experiencing any back pain or heavyweight sleepers. The springs, or coils, are made from steel and these mattresses tend to be the bounciest. Innerspring mattresses can come in a variety of styles of springs, each offering its own twist on comfort and support. Some brands of innerspring mattresses come with individually wrapped, or pocketed, coils to reduce mattress-wide bounce. Pocketed coils will make the sleeping movements of your partner less disturbing to your own sleep. Innerspring mattresses are also available as pillow tops, with either foam or fiberfill making up the top. Pillow top mattresses provide solid support with squishy comfortable softness. Some manufacturers are now calling any innerspring with a pocketed coil system a hybrid. A hybrid uses coils with foam layers to provide the support and softness desired by some sleepers.
Memory Foam
Memory foam mattresses are becoming more popular as their price has declined over the last decade. They are still more expensive than the coil mattress, ringing in at $650-$3000. Memory foams are good for those who sleep primarily on their back and for those with body pain. These mattresses can be purchased with for dual firmness for partners who want or need different levels.The benefits of these mattresses are that they conform to the sleeper’s body, providing that cushion or hugging feeling; they isolate movement, so one partner’s restlessness doesn’t bother the other, and they are far less likely to contain allergens.
Drawbacks to the memory foam are that they can be hard to move around on, with that body-hugging conformity; they are made from synthetic materials that require airing out before use and may have a lingering chemical or plastic smell, and they have a reputation for retaining heat. Some manufacturers are now adding a cool gel layer to the memory foam to counter the heat retention.
- Some of my favorite aspects of memory foam is the pressure relief and motion transfer. Memory foam performs very good for relieving pressure. I have pressure mapped many mattresses and generally memory foam performs the best in this area. Additionally, it minimizes motion transfer really well. Gel, copper, graphite infused memory foams can sleep cooler than traditional memory foam. But ultimately I feel that most foams end up close to your body temperature regardless or how they are infused.
Latex
Latex foam mattresses are comparable in price with memory foam mattresses. They are more breathable than memory foam, so they are less likely to retain heat. They are heavy and hard to turn but are firmer than memory foam. They are extremely durable, although cheap brands will develop lumps. In addition, they are antimicrobial and less likely to contain allergens, which is great for allergy sufferers.
- What I like about latex is that it is, in my opinion, the most durable foam. It does not develop body impressions or sag very easily. I personally think latex also sleeps the coolest. Not trapping heat much and most are aerated and allow good airflow. Latex has less body hug and more of sleeping on top of the mattress feel. It’s springier too so if you have trouble moving around latex helps with that. I don’t think it has as good of pressure relief as memory foam, however.
All Natural/Organic Bed
Natural/Organic Recently, in response to complaints about chemicals in mattresses and in an effort to support the green environmental conservation movement, some manufacturers are offering natural or organic mattresses. These mattresses are among the highest priced non-custom mattresses with a price tag of up to twenty thousand. They offer an organic alternative to memory foam and latex foam. They have no chemical smells and are better for the environment. Not all natural mattresses are equally organic. Since the word natural isn’t regulated, anyone can use it. Some mattresses will be labeled organic, even if only some of the materials are certified organic. If you are seeking a truly organic mattress, look for certification from GOTS or GOLS. To meet the GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) at least 95% of the materials must be certified organic.GOTS also prohibits the use of harmful ingredients like dyes and some chemicals. GOLS (Global Organic Latex Standard) requires that any latex must come from a certified, organic source. Prices for certified mattresses start at about $2000.
- What I like about organic mattresses is that most of them are very durable since they are latex. Some people buy natural to not have “off gassing” For me I am not worried about off gassing, Most people associate off gassing with a smell more than harmful gasses. None of the mattresses are harmful unless maybe you are very sensitive or have some other health issue. But even the “natural” mattresses have a smell. I have even found some latex mattresses have a stronger smell. Latex has a distinct smell. Any smell on any type of mattress will dissipate after a few days, plus you should be using a protector and sheets etc that helps mask it some. It helps to let any mattress air out for at least a few hours or a day if you can.
Air Mattresses
Air-filled or adjustable air mattresses run from $700 to $4000. These mattresses are great for both back and side sleepers. They are especially beneficial for people who suffer from back or neck pain and arthritis. The dually adjustable sides offer flexibility and control, but some owners complain that adjusting the bed at night disturbs their partners. Also, the foam supports the divide the adjustable sides can become uncomfortable over time.
Performance Poly/Custom Blends
Performance poly foams are not memory foam and not latex. But still higher end and better performing that traditional poly foam transition layers. Some of these foams sleep very cool and what many brands pitch is the fact that they have a faster response time than memory foam, but better pressure relief than latex. I have felt some very nice and high performing custom poly blends.
- I have reviewed several mattresses that use a “custom” foam. I tend to really like most of them. Many have sort of a memory foam crossed with a latex feel. So you can achieve pressure relief and bounce at the same time. I like having some body hug but also some bounce. Many of these foams provide that.
