Introduction

The Saatva Solaire mattress features a reported 6 comfort layers and has 50 firmness choices that you can flick between via remote control… That’s right, the Solaire is an automated air mattress; but the attention to detail and brilliant branding used to sell it looks more than a little promising. We can’t wait to get to work and review the Saatva Solaire to find out if it is really as great as it sounds!

Branding

Saatva is a mattress manufacturer based in New York that specialize in memory foam mattresses of every persuasion. They were most notable a few years ago when they launched their own line of bedding featuring Eco-friendly memory foam. Now known to be a huge US manufacturer to be comfortable with; Saatva have expanded their range a little. The Solaire was a result of this, and we like how it is presented.

Saatva opt for a neutral color scheme in their branding and marketing. They are fairly well known through years of advertising, but are still growing steadily. They present their product as the height of luxury, even providing a ‘white glove’ delivery service to keep the mattress in pristine condition until it gets to you.

What we like most about the branding for the Saatva Solaire mattress is that it focuses on the customer. These mattresses are all about customer comfort and that is something that you can’t go wrong with when selling mattresses!

Saatva Solaire Comfort & Feel

Comfort And Feel

The Solaire mattress comes with three firmness options to begin with. You can have the soft mattress at 4 out of 10 on the firmness scale. You can choose the medium mattress which sits at 6 on the firmness scale, or you can have the firmest mattress at 7.5 on that same scale. This gives you a good starting base for comfort levels, meaning you can specify what you want from the outset.

What makes the Saatva Solaire a little different is that you can adjust the firmness rating to suit yourself… that’s right, the Solaire mattress is electronically adjustable. Those six layers include air pockets that inflate and deflate as you press the control pad. This means you can change the comfort and firmness level of the mattress as you command!

Adjustment of air chambers to levels below 25 will keep the mattress soft. When you enter levels above 25 you will experience a firmer mattress. This makes it the ideal mattress in terms of comfort and feel. It also has an organic cotton pillow top that is quilted for comfort and air flow.

You will like the Saatva Solaire Mattress if you:

  • Can never decide whether you want a medium, firm or soft mattress.
  • If you like a memory foam mattress with multiple layers.
  • If you love memory foam mattresses but want great edge support.
  • If you want a high-end, luxury mattress.
  • If you and your partner need different levels of firmness.

You might not Saatva Solaire if you:

  • Are looking for a hybrid mattress – the Solaire has many technological features but foam coated springs is not one of them.
  • If you like a silent mattress the electronic noises from the bed may not suit you, but only an issue when selecting a firmness.
  • It comes with a hefty price tag which is worth it for the luxury, but still expensive.
  • There are no free returns for this mattress and you will be charged a fee.

What are the customers saying?

Overall the Saatva Solaire scores very highly in terms of customer reviews, with an average of 4.9 out of 5 stars. James M. said:

“Best air bed on the market. This bed is like sleeping on a fluffy cloud. Amazing product. Really, the quality of the materials used and the features it offers are unparalleled. “

While Nadine H. said:

“The product is unrivaled. Just superior in every way! We enjoy the most restful sleep EVER!”

And Kathy G. thought:

“I thought I would need hip replacement just two months ago. In less than a week with this bed, all hip pain is gone, as well as back pain. Same with my husband.”

So as you can see, the grand majority of purchasers are very happy with their Saatva Solaire mattresses.

Shipping, Unboxing & Off Gassing

Off-Gassing

Off-gassing is a bit of a deceptive term because any new product that you bring into your home is going to smell like the last place it has been; whether that be a shop floor, a factory or a packaging plant. The smell of a new mattress is no different to the smell of a new car or a new pair of shoes and is nothing to worry about.

Strangely, it tends to be natural or fully organic mattresses that smell the most on account of the materials that they use. We did not notice any smell with the Saatva whatsoever other than a “new” smell.

If you do experience a smell from your new mattress then it will be very faint and it will be gone within 36 hours. Once you place a fresh mattress protector (which we would always recommend) and a clean set of sheets you will barely be able to notice any scent at all.

We gave the Saatva Solaire a 10 out of 10 for off-gassing.

Delivery and Setup

Your Saatva Solaire mattress will come vacuum sealed inside some plastic wrap and placed inside a box. This makes transportation easier and saves on carbon emissions. When it comes, it will be hand delivered by the team at Saatva… it’s just that luxurious!

This mattress is not exactly a bed-in-a-box. Because the base layer is tough and contains the electronics it will need to be placed by the delivery team. They offer a ‘white glove’ delivery service which basically means that they will bring it to you, set it up for you, and ensure everything is fully functional when they leave.

The company give you a four hour time window in which they will deliver your goods. You can read the delivery day instructions by following this link. The vacuum sealed part of your bed will expand once it has been opened and will continue to do so for approximately 24 hours. Even though your mattress won’t be fully expanded until then it will still be safe to sleep on.

The only complaint we have about the delivery and setup is that Saatva charge a $99 delivery and setup fee. If you cancel your order you will not be refunded. If they cancel your order you will be refunded. As much as they provide an exquisite service; we know a hundred other mattress companies that don’t charge a delivery or returns fee…

Saatva Solaire Mattress Construction

There are six layers altogether in this mattress so let’s start from the top. On the top layer is the Organic quilted cotton that provides cushioning between you and the memory foam and stops you sticking to the mattress. That cotton layer is a total of 2.5 inches thick – so much more substantial than a simple cotton slip.

The second layer, the one underneath the cotton cover, is made of special 5 Zone Talalay latex. This layer is one inch thick and gives the bed the ability to conform to your shape. It is zoned into five areas to reinforce structure and give a deeper feel. The third layer is a 2 inch layer of gel-infused memory foam. Remember that the memory foam used by Saatva is Eco-friendly!

The last three layers of the bed are the ones that contain all of the technology that makes this mattress so special. Underneath the gel-infused memory foam is a half inch moisture barrier that we mentioned above. This barrier stops any moisture traveling into the electronic of the bed, keeps you dry in the night and safely works moisture out of the mattress.

Beneath the moisture barrier you will find a 6 inch layer of vulcanized latex and this is where the air chambers reside. These air chambers are enclosed in a cotton cover for added protection. When these pockets expand the firmness level goes up, when they contract the bed gets softer. Lastly, the 6th layer is a convoluted poly-foam base with power edge enclosure technology, all of which gives the mattress support and strength. Keep in mind that this is not a mattress that you can flip over…

As well as using only Eco-friendly memory foam his mattress has a few other certificates up its sleeve. The Solaire is a CertiPUR-US certified mattress, so if off-gassing is a concern for you then this is a great buy. All the materials used have been tested for their impact on health and found to be safe. Saatva have also added Guardin antimicrobial cover treatments into this bedding to ensure that it keeps clean over time. The Solaire also carries the 100% organic cotton validation and the whole firm is a member of the sustainable furnishings council! They really are going out to make this mattress as hypo-allergenic as possible.

Motion Transfer

Because the Saatva Solaire is an air bed, they have split the mattress down the middle into two parts. This means that both you and your partner are effectively sleeping on different firmness ratings and different beds. This is fantastic for motion reduction, since you are on a separate mattress ‘half’ than your partner. You won’t be bounced around in the night by a partner who tosses and turns.

Edge Support

We briefly mentioned above that the Saatva Solaire has great edge support. The reason why this is surprising is that full memory foam beds are notorious for having awful edge support. When you sit down on memory foam it conforms to your shape, which doesn’t lend itself well to creating good edge support, even with a good foam core. When you sit you sink in, and down, and off the bed! But not so with the Solaire…

The air chamber layers within this bed have a pretty solid encasing that helps to support and structure the entirety of the bed above. This mattress has no trouble with edge support whatsoever, since even that air chamber layer is reinforced by the structural bottom layer. When it comes to edge support the Saatva Solaire is actually just about the best full memory foam bed you can buy.

Temperature:

The first layer of the Solaire mattress is made from that lovely quilted organic cotton. This keeps the body away from any potentially sticky, hot-sleeping foam. It also allows for a little airflow underneath you while you sleep. The absolute key to the temperature neutrality of this bed, however, lies in all those air pockets. In fact, the firmer the setting you choose, the more air is under you as you sleep. This allows you to stay temperature regulated all night long.

Saatva have really thought about temperature control. Ordinarily a full foam mattress would sleep hot; but between the multiple layers and the air chambers there is a lot of natural cooling going on. Added to that is the fourth layer deep – a moisture barrier. This barrier prevents any damp from being moved around in the mattress so even if you do sleep hot, you won’t wake up soaked.
