The Casper Wave has some features you will not find anywhere else.  It’s ergonomically designed to cradle your back and provide good pressure relief.  We love the feel of it but the one complaint we would have is that it is not in everyone’s price range.

Overall Score 4.7/5

Casper Wave Hybrid Review

Their new Casper Wave mattress is hyped as an upgrade on the immensely popular original Casper model. This new version of the memory foam mattress boasts an added layer of foam, but that’s not the only change from the well-performing original. The main selling point of the Wave has to be the new Natural Geometry System, which provides extra support to extreme pressure points, while lightening the load on others.

Specifically, the base layer of the mattress is lined with grooves at the top and bottom ends, while the middle is strengthened to take the main bulk of your body weight. This ‘up and down’ pattern of the design is presumably where the Wave gets its name, although it could very easily apply to the sensation of weightless sleep that it works to provide.

Although not technically a hybrid, the Wave does mimic hybrid technology with its application of zone-specific support – a feature usually only delivered by a coil system.

The Wave enters the market in the premium price range, and has big competition in the face of its previous, much celebrated model. So does the Casper Wave live up to its expectation?

We’ve put together this in-depth review which examines every aspect of the mattress, to give you the knowledge you need to make the right choice.

What makes the Casper Wave Mattress different?

Precisely engineered for ergonomic support where you need it most. It’s a breakthrough in sleep technology.
The Casper Wave is the summit of Casper’s unparalleled R&D — the result of intensive design and engineering work in Casper’s new lab in San Francisco.
The first mattress designed to respond to body geometry, the Casper Wave uses patent-pending, finely tuned contouring zones and polymer support channels that form to your natural shape.
Designed as an ergonomic sleep surface, the Casper Wave provides superior spinal alignment while reducing pressure in the shoulders. The new top layer is a virtually weightless, velvety foam that melts away for effortless comfort. Together, this unique combination creates deeper, more restorative sleep

You will like the Casper Wave Hybrid Mattress if you:

  • Like to sleep cool The design of the Casper with latex on top and memory foam on bottom helps it disperse heat efficiently.  I did not experience excessive heat at all.  You do not sink in super far but so you do not get too hot but you still have sufficient body conformance.

  • Sleep in multiple positions – This mattress is a good medium feel with good body conformance.  Sleeping on your side, back or stomach Casper will conform to your body very well.  The extra support in the middle works well with all positions. See my video for example.

  • Like the combo of bounce and body conformance With the Flo Foam layer on top Casper maintains good bounce which makes it easier to adjust positions and not feel stuck.

  • Require extra lower back support – The middle support the Casper Wave has integrated into the middle of the mattress really does provide additional support in the lumbar area.
  • Are a side sleeper – The Casper Wave Hybrid Mattress also has channeled foam that provides extra give in the shoulder area.  So for side sleeping you do not have a lot of pressure pushing back up on your shoulder.

You might not like the Casper Wave Mattress if you:

  • Have a tight budget – The Casper Wave Hybrid Mattress is one of the priciest mattresses we have reviewed so far.  It does perform like a luxury mattress however.
  • Want an all foam mattress – This is a hybrid model using coils but they do offer a foam version as well.

Casper Wave Mattress Delivery & Set up

Casper will deliver the Wave for FREE, and even offer next-day delivery for an additional fee. They’ll send you delivery tracking information via email to allow you to keep an eye on the progress of your order. Orders must be placed by 2pm to qualify for next-day delivery and will cost $15.

Also for free, the manufacturer will provide their White Glove delivery service. They will bring the mattress into your chosen room, unpack it, set it up and remove all the packaging. They will also remove your old mattress and box spring if you so desire. An added bonus is that Casper donate any recovered mattresses to charity, or have them recycled.

Be sure to move the mattress into your desired room before opening, as it will expand quickly and may become more difficult to manoeuvre. Be careful not to damage the fabric of the bed when you cut it from its wrappings.

Free delivery is a common feature of most premium mattresses these days, so the Wave succeeds on that point. An additional bonus is the free White Glove delivery service, for which many companies will charge substantial fees. The opportunity for next-day delivery at a modest cost of $15 means the Wave scores high here.

Casper Wave Mattress Comfort & Feel

One word that keeps coming up when describing the Wave is ‘liquidy’. It’s not a word you would necessarily find in a dictionary, but it seems to be apt in describing how it feels to lay down on the Wave. The top layer of the mattress cradles you, while the bottom layers respond by providing support.

The Casper Wave falls at around 6.5 on the firmness scale, with 1 being the softest and 10 being the firmest.

When you lay down you sink into the comfort foams right away and begin to feel the support.  Especially in the middle where there is extra support.  You honestly can FEEL it.  It’s not just a gimmick.

The general consensus seems to be that the Wave falls near the medium-to-firm range, so may not be the first choice for those seeking a softer bed. However, the contouring memory-foam still provides enough ‘lush’ to make for a comfy night’s sleep for almost any sleeper. The mattress is definitely aimed at the huge market of mid-range sleepers, and is a viable option for side, back or front sleepers.

The Wave is a premium product that ships with a lot of expectations. As far as overall comfort goes, it gives a good account of itself.

Casper Wave Mattress Motion Transfer

The Casper Wave Hybrid Mattress  performs great in this area.  The pocketed coils and memory foam layers help to disperse motion pretty well.

The motion reduction on the Casper Wave Hybrid Mattress is such that you can easily get in and out of bed without disturbing a partner. If sitting on the bed doing paperwork, you could sit your coffee cup right next to you and not have to worry about it spilling.

Reviewers online have testified to dancing on the bed while a full wine-glass sits on it, and it not having spilled a drop. We didn’t try that for ourselves, however we can testify that the Wave does well to reduce motion disturbance.

See our video for the testing we did above.

Casper Wave Mattress Off Gassing

As with all mattresses, when you open the Casper Wave you may notice a faint ‘new mattress smell’. This is pretty common and would be there no matter what brand you choose. Just like a new couch, a new car, or a new book, your new mattress will likely emit a slight scent for the first day or so.  This mattress actually sort of smelt good.  It smelled like they added lavender or something to it.  I can’t explain but it had a nice smell actually.

Natural and organic mattresses are known to have more pungent smells, even though people often associate them with less off-gassing. The Wave does not use natural materials, but uses CertiPUR-US certified foams. Any scent you pick up from the mattress upon opening is completely harmless and will dissipate eventually.

For maximum effect, stand your mattress up on its end, and allow it to ‘air out’ for 24-hours before you use it. We recommend applying a mattress protector after the airing out process. After you lay your bed sheets on top of that, any smell should be gone.

A ‘new bed smell’ is a normal part of buying any mattress. The Wave performs no worse than most mattresses.

Casper Wave Mattress Temperature

The Casper Wave Hybrid Mattress utilizes open-cell technology in its memory foam, allowing for ventilation and circulation throughout the materials of the mattress.

This mattress is packed with cooling features (there is a cooler version upgrade too) It has a layer of gel on top with aerated foams and perforations in the foam layers.  All of the design elements aid in cooler sleep.  PLUS, you do not sink way into the mattress so less of you body is engulfed by foam.

Perception of heat will change from person to person, based on age, weight, health etc. For some, adding a mattress protector would be too much. Overall, the Wave manages to stay cool at the best of times.

Casper Wave Mattress Edge Support

All in all, there’s not much to complain about. Because of the conforming nature of the memory foam, there’s no chance of you rolling off in the middle of the night. Sitting right on the edge of the bed will cause heavy compression, but the memory foam expands back into place very quickly.

Yes, there will be sinkage at the sides, but only when you’re sitting right on the edge. If this is an important factor for you, then take note. Otherwise, the Wave doesn’t raise any significant edge problems.

Casper Wave Mattress Construction

Polyurethane foams are CertiPUR-US® certified. They are made without ozone-depleting chemicals and phthalates regulated by the Consumer Product Safety Commission. The foams have been tested for low VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) emissions for indoor air quality (less than 0.5 parts per million).

  • Planet-friendly textiles: up to 121 recycled bottles in each cover

Casper Wave Mattress Firmness and Feel:

Casper Wave Mattress My thoughts (Ross)

I really like the overall feel of the Wave.  The top layer of foam is very responsive yet soft.  Many times I find that some mattress “features” are gimmicky. I was worried about that here.

Speaking about the Wave I think their design actually works.  The lumbar support makes a big difference for support and ultimately for longevity.  I can honestly feel the extra support which is great for the back and not to mention the overall longevity you will get out of the mattress.  I do not think you will develop body impressions very quickly on this due to the extra support there.  It is a feature that has many benefits.

Softness-Firmness level: 6
1 Very Soft
5 Medium
10 Very Firm

Casper Wave Mattress Adjustable Base Performance:

The Casper will work great on an adjustable base.  Being an all foam it will bend easy and lay back flat when you are done.

Overall Summary

Do I think it is worth the price?  I do, there is design elements here you do not see anywhere else that serve a purpose and actually work.  This is an investment in your sleep yes, but I do believe it could help a lot of people with bad backs.

To sum it up then, just how good a deal does the Wave represent?
Well, first off, we’re talking about a mattress at the more expensive end of the spectrum, even within the premium bed market. The queen-size model will set you back over $2000. By keeping an eye out for discounts you may be able to get the price down further.

Casper offers interest free financing to help break up the payments.

Given its price, the Wave is expected to do big things. Regardless of price, it’s a comfy mattress that provides a great sleep. But some will still question its value, particularly in comparison to the original Casper mattress.

We recommend the Casper Wave to anyone who:
Wants a mattress for a variety of sleeping styles.
Would benefit from extra support around the middle of the bed.
Desires a modern, memory-foam mattress from a trusted company.
Wants excellent motion reduction and pressure isolation.
Wants to sink in to the ‘liquidy’ surface.
Has the money to afford a luxury, premium-priced mattress.

Overall, the Casper Wave performs very well, regardless of price. Its predecessor set high-expectations, and only time will tell if the Wave manages to live up to those standards. But for now, we can say that this is an extremely comfy mattress that would be well worth treating yourself to.
